KillaJoule electric sidecar motorcycle tops 216 mph

KillaJoule electric sidecar motorcycle tops 216 mph: "University of Denver engineering graduate student Eva HÃ¥kansson pushed her home-built electric sidecar motorcycle "KillaJoule" to just over 216 mph (347 km/h) last week, while setting a new world record for electric sidecar bikes at the BUB Motorcycle Speed Trials at Bonneville Salt Flats. The top speed comes achingly close to the fastest record ever set with an internal combustion engine for a bike of that type: 219 mph (352 km/h)."

Intel demos WiGig wireless technology that is 10 times faster than 802.11n

Intel demos WiGig wireless technology that is 10 times faster than 802.11n: "Many home and business local area networks (LANs) built around the 802.11n standard are starting to buckle under the strain placed on them by an ever-increasing number of wireless devices clamoring for bandwidth. A new technology known as WiGig is looking to clear the bottleneck by offering transfer rates 10 times that of the fastest 802.11n networks."

Simple eye tracking test used to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s

Simple eye tracking test used to identify early signs of Alzheimer’s: "As researchers look for better ways to diagnose Alzheimer’s disease in its early stages, one promising detection methodology to emerge is a simple eye tracking procedure developed by scientists at Lancaster University in conjunction with Royal Preston Hospital. The results of such tests can help flag initial signs of memory impairment that are associated with the onset of the disease."

ORNL roof-and-attic system keeps houses cool in summer, warm in winter

ORNL roof-and-attic system keeps houses cool in summer, warm in winter: "Heating and cooling a house are two of the biggest ongoing costs for homeowners and are responsible for the bulk of the average household’s energy consumption. A new kind of roof-and-attic system field tested at the DoE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) improves the efficiency of both winter heating and summer cooling. Importantly, the new system can be retrofitted to most existing roofs.

Cannondale’s CERV bike dynamically adjusts to changing terrain

Cannondale’s CERV bike dynamically adjusts to changing terrain: "The curved drop handlebars long found on racing bicycles are pretty nifty, right? If you want to get down low to reduce your wind resistance you grab hold of the lower part, and if you’re climbing a hill and need to get a bit more weight and leverage on the crank you can shift your grip to the top bar. The Continuously Ergonomic Race Vehicle (CERV) concept bike takes things a step (or two) further with a design that dynamically adjusts the position of the handlebars based on the terrain being covered, all without changing the seat-to-crank height."

Microsoft wants to turn your living room into a holodeck

Microsoft wants to turn your living room into a holodeck: "Microsoft is beginning to emerge from what some have called "the missing decade" as a company eager to innovate and forge the future rather than be dragged along into it by its competitors. The Xbox brand is very much part of popular culture, and the Xbox 360 is expected to be superseded by a successor in 2013. But Microsoft is looking even further forward than that, with a recently revealed patent application suggesting the company wants to turn living rooms into something akin to the holodecks featured in Star Trek."

Flying Scotsman's "Beastie" to be first human-powered vehicle to achieve 100 mph on the flat?

Flying Scotsman's "Beastie" to be first human-powered vehicle to achieve 100 mph on the flat?: "Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree is building a special sort of bicycle. He's building it in his own kitchen without a lick of research assistance to inform the design. Why might research assistance be useful? Because with this bicycle, dubbed Beastie, Obree intends not only to break the human-powered vehicle land speed record, but also hopes to be the first person to break 100 mph (161 km/h). But then, Obree's never been one to do things the easy way."
