The tariff argument and why Trump is right. First, why do tariffs exist?
The tariffs started after WW2. They aimed to allow the
countries damaged by the war to sell their products to the U.S.
The tariffs allowed them to profit more from their products
sold in America to help rebuild their countries. We were being generous. That
should have ended decades ago. They want to keep them on, to keep getting more
from America forever.
There is no reason for the tariffs other than greed by the
countries with them. The tariffs should not match with others; they should be
eliminated. Why should those countries price American products in their country
at a point that makes them unlikely to sell? They are unlikely to sell because
they sell for much more than the products they make in their country.
The only fair thing to do is to drop the tariffs. Make
them zero between all unless there are exceptional circumstances.
Trump is trying to match what other countries charge us,
which makes it moot, and they should all go to zero.
I experience that with my book sales. I make less money for
every book I sell outside the U.S. because they charge a VAT tax. The books are
delivered digitally, so there is no cost for the country where the person
buying my book lives. They want to make money off something they have no
reason to make money from.
Cars are also a great example. How many American cars do you
see in Germany? Almost none. How many German cars do you see in America? American
cars are too expensive in Germany for the Germans to buy. It's not fair.
