What Is Freedom?

The concept of freedom means different things to different people. Depending on the level of freedom that you have in your life. Most people, when they think of the definition of freedom, they think of Liberty. Which includes freedom of speech. The definition of liberty is having the ability to act according to your own will. If it does not affect the ability of someone else to act according to their own will. Most rational people would agree that this is how society should function.

American Freedom

The American founding fathers felt that this concept was of the utmost importance. When they were deciding what the United States of America would be, and how it would function. It was so important they wrote this line into the second paragraph of the Declaration of Independence. “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. — That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.”

The importance of this paragraph is the basis for our system of government. This sets the U.S. apart from all other countries in the world. If you understand what this means, you know that the U.S. Government is now trying to take control of all the areas of our life. And taking away our liberty, and our freedom to make our own decisions. The Biden administration is not taking its powers from the consent of the governed. They are telling us we are not smart enough to debate the issues of health care, global warming, etc. They are telling us they know better than we do what is best for us. They want to take away your freedom to do what you want.

Taking Away American Freedom

Forcing people to buy health insurance and fining them if they do not. Forcing people to pay tremendous increases in costs for energy. To line the pockets of a few people in the name of saving the planet from something that several prominent scientists do not even think exists. Or do not think that it has any effect on the temperature of the earth. Many think it would be beneficial if the earth were a few degrees warmer.

If they control the health care system, they will control most of the aspects of our lives. They will tell us if we can get treatment for an ailment. Or if we can smoke, or if we can eat fast food. If we can drink alcohol, or if we can do anything else that they feel we should not do. I am not saying that these things are good. What I am saying is, because these are legal products that we can readily buy, we should be able to use them when we want. If using them does not affect the right of someone else in their rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

The health care issue needs to be debated. We should fix the problems with the health care system; we should not start over from scratch. Most things about the health care system are fine. It is the broken health insurance system that is the problem. That is for a different article.

Our Freedom in America Affects the Rest of the World

The taking away of liberty from Americans affects not only Americans. Regardless of what many people think, much of the success of the rest of the world relies on the success of America. America helped defeat the enemy in two world wars and continues to help protect most of Europe to this day. We helped rebuild Europe and Asia after World War 2. We also give massive amounts of foreign aid to help countries that have corrupt governments. Countries that operate to keep their people oppressed, so the people cannot be the best that they can be.

The American people, on their own, give hundreds of millions of dollars to charity, outside of the government. We do this to help people anywhere needed. Because we can and want to. The buying power of the American people because we are prosperous helps the rest of the world from our consumption. We buy enough products produced in other parts of the world that losing that buying power would affect the economy of all those places.

Why We Need Freedom

If they take away our opportunity to be successful and to have extra money to give to people who need help, that will have a huge effect on the needy people around the world. If you look at where government aid and charity donations come from. Nothing comes from China, Russia, or any other communist government when people are in need. This results from government control. The wealth and prosperity that comes with the freedom to be the best we can be, and to be as wealthy as we can, by being able to succeed to our fullest potential, is what makes it all work.

Freedom allows you to succeed

I am not putting down any European forms of government. Several European governments are moving to a more capitalistic form of governing, while we are trying to move toward socialism. America is moving in the wrong direction. A socialist government in America will hurt the entire world economy. It will also damage the system that has created the most prosperous and freest nation ever. 

That is not a good thing. It also will take away from the basic rights of all Americans, life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. It also makes us less equal if we cannot all be the best that we can be. Being equal means that we all have the same opportunity to succeed. It does not mean that we all have the same level of success. Some people will work much harder to succeed. They should have more than people who do not want to work to succeed.

The Mayflower Compact was the first real government document of America. Written by the people of the Mayflower. When the pilgrims came to America, they set up a system of government that was like a commune. Everyone got a piece of land. They would all farm their land, raise animals, make shoes, etc. Then they put their output into a communal store. Everyone would then split up what the community had evenly. They kept this system for only two years.

The problem they found was that if one family grew one hundred bushels of grain, and another grew fifty, they would each get seventy-five. There was no incentive to be better. After two years, they changed and allowed people to grow what they could, and produce what they could, then trade for what they needed. They produced more because they could trade for extra things that they wanted by being better and growing more, or by producing more products that were worth trading for, such as milk, meat, or shoes, or whatever. 

That was the start of capitalism. If someone was having a tough time, everyone would help them if they needed it. They did it because it worked. The incentive to be more successful and create something that people want to own, and need will make you a success and create wealth. This is the real American dream.

The Need to Preserve Freedom

This is not a rant; I am truly worried about our great country. I am proud to be an American and happy that we can help the less fortunate throughout the world. It is something that Americans have always done, from the very beginning. 

We can easily lose our freedom.

Ronald Reagan once said, “Freedom is never more than one generation from extinction.” 

We are on the threshold of that being a reality if we do not stop the loss of liberty. The next generation will not have freedom in the way the founding fathers wanted us to have freedom. We must stop it and hold on to the beliefs of our founding fathers. Being able to do whatever we want if it does not hurt others trying to do the same thing. They knew what they were talking about. We need to get back to those principles if we are going to save America the way our ancestors set it up.

Thousands of Canadians come to the United States every year for medical treatment that they can’t get in Canada or can’t get in a reasonable time. Most Canadians also have private health insurance because the state health care system does not pay for several things.
